Serial Number Verification Checklist

Use this checklist to verify that a serial number or microchip setup conforms to factory standards before purchasing a secondhand designer item.

1. Check the Font style

Counterfeit manufacturers often get fonts incorrect. Check the shape of numbers (especially 1s, 0s, and 7s) on serial stickers. Authentic Chanel stickers use a specific serif font with slash marks on zeros (in some eras).

2. Check Placement and Material

Stickers and stamps should be placed exactly where the brand mandates (e.g., inside pockets, on bottom seams). They should not look off-center, crooked, or poorly cut.

3. Test NFC Microchips

Bags from 2021 onwards (Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Dior) utilize NFC microchips. You can use standard smartphone NFC scanner apps to verify if a chip responds, though keep in mind fakers can clone chip URLs. Authentic chips scan to internal, secure encrypted registries, not just basic web pages.
